How many wind generators would it take to replace 50% of the power plants powered by coal and natural gas?

According to the Edison Electric Institute (eei.com), in 2005 there was 1,067,019 MW of capacity available. Of the energy generated, 49.7% came from coal and 18.7% came from natural gas.

Doing the math, that means to replace half of the power plants powered by coal and natural gas, we have to replace 364,920 MW of capacity.

Assuming that the average wind generator has a capacity of 250 kW, we need 4 of them for every MW of capacity. Once again, doing the math, we would need 1,459,680 250-kW windmills to replace 50% of the power plants currently powered by coal or natural gas.

If you can build the plants for $800 / kW (that might be too cheap), each turbine would cost $200,000. Since you need 1,500,000 of them (rounding to make the math easier, I only have an 8 digit calculator), you would have to find investment of $300 billion.

Assuming you found the space and the investors, you will NEVER get this past the environmentalists (ironic, isn’t it?). They will complain that the "whoosh whoosh whoosh" sound is noise pollution and that too many birds are flying into the turbine blades.

Years ago small farmers all over the world used a simple system to generate their own electricity using a natural resource found everywhere – Wind. When power companies became commonplace and widespread people began to depend o them for their energy needs and left behind a reliable and self dependant method of generating power. Over the last twenty years or so, there has been a steady number of households turning back to wind as their power source, and why not.

Not only is it a cost effective way of providing power but also of doing your part for the environment. A person’s carbon footprint could be dramatically decreased by simply reverting to the wind as a source of power using one of the simpler methods of harnessing and generating electricity, namely, the windmill.

When one thinks of a windmill you probably have an image of Holland, where for years windmills have been commonplace and were used originally for turning mill stones to produce flour and crush grain. The windmill I recent times has been sprouting up not one at a time but by the dozen in the often seen “wind farms” across the globe.

Often standing 90 metres tall or more, these wind turbines are being installed by developers and even farmers as a business opportunity. The power generated from these turbines is fed into the national grid and the farmer gets paid for this service.

These wind turbines are on a large scale, but what can the householder do when on a limited budget. There are many who wish to do their part for the environment but simply don’t have sufficient funds to make the change over to renewable energy sources. Luckily enough to power the average size home using a windmill doesn’t require much equipment or money to set up. Comprehensive guides and manuals have been compiled with the energy conscious individual in mind.

Diy wind power is a major part of renewable energy systems. In this age of global warming when organizations are working hard to make people realize that we should adopt a lifestyle that is environment friendly. We must think about making maximum use of some features that nature is providing us. They are cost effective and immensely available. Yes, we are talking about Wind Power. Wind power is used to stop emissions into the atmosphere from conventional power systems. The wind holds remarkable energy and so harvesting it using a windmill is a very cost effective way to make power.

wind generators called turbines are a good pick for home consumption and you can either use grid connection or battery system, depending on your own preference. On the other hand Renewable energy is sort of unreliable, besides being a difficulty shot to produce. Conversely wind power is much easier to produce and can fulfill almost 50% of energy needs for home consumption. Production of power through renewable means is feasible if you are ready to invest heavily. But if you are looking for an economic way out, with small investment then wind power is for you, and it is really good to be used for home. They come in many shapes and sizes, choose which suits your needs better.

Coming to the wind generator, its main purpose is to generate electricity in the system. Modern wind generator today is known as three-bladed wind generator. They are good for rotor balance and efficient in use. Rotational speed of the wind turbine determines the voltage and frequency of the generator. Wind electric systems can provide electricity on remote, off-grid sites, or right in town connected to the utility grid. So far maintenance and up being is concerned, as compare to solar-electric systems Wind systems asks for more attention and maintenance.

Wind turbines are not limited to only home consumption; they are equally popular in the public work sector. In fact they provide many advantages to public sector buildings, schools, offices and to local authorities. Public sector estate can become carbon neutral. It can benefit from on-grid environmentally sound energy and generate revenue from excess energy production. Small wind turbines protect themselves from high winds by changing the pitch of the blades. Governments are able to eliminate energy costs and reduce carbon emissions, by adopting wind turbine technology. You can understand that wind power has a lot more potential and it is consumer friendly also, besides being environment friendly. And at the end of the day there’s nothing quite like watching your wind generator convert your wind storm into electrical energy…what do you think?

With society slowly moving towards a cleaner and greener planet, alternative energy is being pushed more and more into the spotlight. Wind power currently comes in second only to natural gas as a renewable source of energy. Last year there was over 1700 megawatts of power product by wind turbines. This year it wind power is expected to account for about 1.5% of the US power needs. Commercial wind farms will account for most of this energy however residential wind turbines are becoming more and more popular and are slowly helping to reduce harmful emissions which tend to pollute our atmosphere; this is why more people want to know how to build a wind turbine.

Wind power is a very clean source of energy, especially when compared to fossil fuel energy which is the main stay in today’s world. Usually the only objection to wind turbines is their so called “visual pollution” and sometimes even the noise that they create. This however is not the case with residential wind turbines. Today’s wind turbines are very compact thanks to technology and they can contribute quite considerably to the overall household energy consumption which in turn saves you money. In fact if you combine it with a solar power unit you could quite easily power your average sized home. While there are household commercial units available, with the advent of the internet there are a number of guides that can easily show you how to build a wind turbine and often at a cost of less than $200.

Some people think that if you are planning on installing a wind turbine at your home that you have to be in an open area so you can get a maximum amount of wind hitting your turbine, this however is not the case as even the smallest amount of breeze can be enough to generate so electricity which will be stored in the battery units. The amount of energy that you can produce is a combination of wind flow and design. Obviously the more wind that the wind turbine is exposed to, the more energy that it can generate and the more energy that can be stored in its batteries. However the traditional windmill design that most people are familiar with isn’t the only design. Roof top mounted wind turbines are comparably small units which do not use the traditional tower as these turbines are designed to be used in relatively sheltered or built up areas where there is not a good wind flow.

If you live out in the country, these units can be fantastic for you especially if you are prone to having power outages and don’t like to use your gasoline generator. The great thing about learning how to build a wind turbine is that you can make more than one turbine for your home which of course means that you will generate more power for your home which in turn means that you will save more money by cutting your power costs.

Home made wind power is much cheaper than the conventional power produced by large power plants. Although there are some of the preconditions you must know so that you can make home made wind power economically. You should ensure that you live in an area where the wind speed is above seven to ten miles per hour and there is no restriction by governmental agencies to build and install wind turbines. If both the above conditions are fulfilled, you have an opportunity to get electricity from your home made wind power generators and start running your home electric and electronic appliances.

The disadvantage of electricity produced by large power plants is that they use non-renewable sources such as coal, gas, nuclear fuel etc and all these causes pollution, however the home made wind power is absolutely pollution free and at the same time it is renewable and cost negligible in comparison to the convention power. You can make your own home made wind power generators using the step by step guide available at Internet as the home made wind power generator will be quite cheap and you will have to spend less than $200 for complete unit. This cost is much cheaper than a few thousands dollars, which will be required to spend on a readymade generator.

A good step by step guide is available at Internet and once you go through it, you can make your own home made wind power and can start producing electricity and can start running home appliances from it. These guides give you the complete list of the raw material required and the cost of each item so that you can fabricate a home made wind power generator within $ 200 yourself and start reducing your monthly electricity bills by up to 80 percent.

How to reduce your electricity bill

If you have been bogged by the enormous electricity bills you have been getting, it is time to take some concrete steps. You can reduce your electricity bills by following very simple steps.

This article will list some simple, easy-to-do things to reduce your electricity bill.

Limited use: Start with the room you are sitting in. If you were to take a call in another room or join your family at the dining table, would you just step out of your room without any concern for the electrical appliances in the room? If you would, stop right there, and look around. Switch off all the appliances even if you would be back in five minutes. Yes, even that will help. Every drop of water constitutes to the ocean.

Another thing to take care of here is what you perceive as an electronic appliance. Would you switch off the television set, turn off the fan, but not the light bulb? Yes, you need light, but not now when you are leaving the room. Taking care of these small things will go a long way in reducing the dreaded huge electricity bills.

Smart investments: Make some smart power investments by replacing your incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. These bulbs are a great power-saving investment.

Buy the Power Save gadget. The gadget helps monitor the power supply to your house and uses the minimum that is needed.

Home appliance usage: Most of us complain that the electricity bill touches the sky because of the number of electrical appliances they have at home. However, the electricity bill is not directly proportional to the number of gadgets you use but the way you use them. Let’s see how you can avoid the typical power-wasters.

• Use the washing machine only when there is a full load of clothes.
• Keep the geyser on for the minimal amount of time.
• Keep the air-conditioner at the minimum low or high temperature, just enough to keep you off the heat or the cold outside.
• Switch off the computer monitor even when you take a one-minute break. It takes just a second to switch on the monitor again!

Yeah, you have to stick to this way of life for saving power at home and for the world.

Remember, reducing your electricity bill is equivalent to saving power, thus helping the world save power for its future generations.

Bob H.

If you are like many Americans, you are probably scared to receive the utility bills at the end of the month. This is normal in this uncertain economy.

Did you know that you can save more than 70% on your utility bill by switching to alternative sources of power?

If you want, you can choose to live off the grid and say goodbye to your energy bills for good. Thousands of people are already doing it, and you can to by creating their own homemade wind generators.

How can you create alternative energy and save money?

You can create alternative energy by using the power of three natural elements.

1. Sun power

2. Wind power

3. Hydro power

In this article, we are going to talk about using wind power to create electricity. To make your own energy with wind power, you are going to create your own homemade wind generators.

Before you consider building your own wind generators, make sure that there is enough wind in your area. If there is not enough wind, you will not be able to produce the amount of kinetic energy you need to convert the wind into electricity.

Once you installed your own windmill, you will not have many things to do since they don’t require a lot of maintenance. The only problems I can see would be when a bird is is made prisoner by your windmill, or a major storm in your area. In this case, your tower will probably suffer.

Be aware that installing your own home made wind generators can cost you from a few hundreds dollars to a few thousands. You need to conduct your project seriously and learn about all the option available to you before you start. If you really want to do it yourself, you may want to invest in a good guide like Earth4energy manual for example. You will save a lot of money.

The benefits of installing your own windmill generator beside saving money is that you will contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide reducing emissions.
